Chen Qizhao and Shen Yuhuai weren’t in the same school. In the past, the first person the driver came to pick up from school every day was Shen Yuhuai. Ever since that day, every time the driver came over, he would bring a small follower wearing a black and red school uniform. They walked on the school road and could attract the attention of other teachers and students.
Chen Qizhao didn’t like to go alone when out of school. He would take the initiative to hold Shen Yuhuai’s hand. He would pull Shen Yuhuai’s little finger and follow him out of school without making noise.
In the afternoon, there was an extra voice in the quiet classroom. Occasionally, Chen Qizhao would come early. Before school finished, he would quietly pass by the door of the class to take a look. Then he would wait until school was over before entering the classroom to find a person.
The homework of the two started to be completed after school. Shen Yuhuai finished writing a paper while Chen Qizhao finished the homework assigned by the teacher. Then they waited for Chen Shiming and Shen Xuelan before returning to the Chen house after school.
Occasionally after homework was done, Shen Yuhuai would take him to the school’s sports field for a walk. The moment the child arrived on the playground, he liked to jump and run. He ran along the lines of the track. It was neatly inside the track like a clever little athlete.
“I want to go to the same school as Brother!” Chen Qizhao said.
Shen Yuhuai paused for a moment while thinking that this might not happen. The difference between the two of them was four years, but it wasn’t just four school grades. Shen Yuhuai was smart and precocious. His academic progress was very fast. He skipped a grade when his school education allowed him. Meanwhile, Chen Qizhao was different and took classes step by step… When Chen Qizhao was in elementary school, Chen Qizhao was in middle school. By the time Chen Qizhao was in middle school, Shen Yuhuai had already reached high school.
Several well-known private schools in S City had separate campuses for middle and high school. It was basically the same as being two separate schools.
It was as if there was only a little bit of luck away from each other.
Shen Yuhuai didn’t hit Chen Qizhao and just said, “Then you have to study hard.”
The two of them played at school and at the Chen house. Shen Yuhuai once went to pick up Chen Qizhao from school, and it was when a small sports meeting was held at Chen Qizhao’s school. School finished later. Shen Yuhuai followed Chen Shiming and Shen Xuelan to Chen Qizhao’s school together. They immediately saw the little boy standing at the starting line.
He ran quickly and crossed the finish line in one go.
Then he ran over with a smile. He hugged Chen Shiming before running over to hug Shen Yuhuai’s thigh.
“I took first place!” Chen Qizhao looked at him and asked for credit. “Am I good?”
The boy had sweat on his forehead. His eyebrows curved when he laughed, and the little tiger teeth exposed were particularly cute.
Shen Yuhuai praised him. “You are very powerful. Qizhao is the most powerful.”
The two of them were talking here. Chen Shiming and Shen Xuelan, who were skipping class, were also talking on the other side.
Chen Qizhao stood only to Shen Yuhuai’s chest. Shen Yuhuai could easily touch the child’s head with a raised hand. Once they stood there talking, other people around them couldn’t get involved.
Shen Xuelan looked at her younger brother, who was usually quiet and rarely played with children. “They all say that there is a generation gap in age, but I can’t see any generation gap between these two kids.”
Chen Shiming also felt so. “The two of them have a good relationship.”
The sports meeting was a big event. Zhang Yazhi originally wanted to follow the child all day, but she temporarily had something to do at the studio. It was already afternoon when she rushed over. She saw that the children were having fun, so they didn’t go back to the Chen house in the evening to eat. She took them to Chen Qizhao’s favorite restaurant to celebrate the child’s trophy.
These days lasted a long time, but Shen Yuhuai didn’t see Chen Qizhao every day. On weekends with no classes, they only occasionally went to the Chen house. They basically didn’t see the Chen family on weekends. However, as long as he saw Chen Qizhao, the other person would definitely tell him what happened over the weekend.
After staying in the Chen house for around three months, the problems of the Shen family were gradually solved. Shen Yuhuai and Shen Xuelan returned to the Shen house after school and didn’t go to the Chen house to bother them. Their parents were basically and the times when the two families met gradually decreased. They were occasional dinners, such as weekend dinners where several families of S City came together and brought their children to play.
It was just that on those occasions, Chen Qizhao was like the sun and always gathered a lot of friends around him.
Shen Yuhuai wasn’t suitable for this and couldn’t integrate into the small team. He finally stayed with Yan Kaiqi to chat.
Occasionally, Chen Qizhao would run over and ask him if he wanted to play together, but Shen Yuhuai refused.
The two of them had less contact. Nevertheless, every time Chen Qizhao got tired of playing with others, he would come to sit and chat with Shen Yuhuai.
“Mom didn’t take me out to play this week.” Chen Qizhao said, “Only Yan Kailin came to play with me.”
It was normal for parents to be busy. The Shen family also had a busy period. Shen Yuhuai heard his parents say that Uncle Chen’s business had become busy recently, as if there was some type of business transformation. This wasn’t in the scope of his uncle. He only knew that there must be busy times when doing business. Shen Yuhuai had an independent personality and didn’t feel that his parents’ busy schedule had any effect on him. Yet when he saw Chen Qizhao’s sullen look, he couldn’t help asking, “Where do you want to go on weekends?”
“Amusement park!” Chen Qizhao replied. “Uncle Zhang said he could take me there, but I don’t want to play with him.”
He wanted to go with his parents, brother or friends.
Shen Yuhuai didn’t like amusement park rides very much. He preferred to read a few books during this time. But when he heard Chen Qizhao say this, he still asked, “Then when I finish the final exam this semester, do you want to go there and play together?”
Chen Qizhao exclaimed, “Okay! Can I bring Yan Kailin with me?”
“Yes. We can also call Yan Kailin’s brother.”
Chen Qizhao snapped his fingers. “Then I will call my brother, and you can call Sister Xuelan.”
Shen Yuhuai paused for a while. He didn’t feel that Shen Xuelan was interested in such things but still said, “Okay.”
The agreement between the two of them was set, but there was no chance to realize it.
On a weekend after the agreement, Chen Qizhao and Yan Kailin fell into the water. There was a big fuss about this matter, and Chen Qizhao had a high fever. Then the time for the dinners decreased, and Shen Yuhuai’s chance to see Chen Qizhao was reduced. Later, the Yan family went abroad because of business, and the two Yan brothers went with them. Later, an opportunity to go out to study was placed in front of Shen Yuhuai.
The Shen family knew that the child was ambitious and gave the child a broader opportunity for development.
Shen Yuhuai had seen Chen Qizhao before leaving S City. The child was already accompanied by other children and studying hard. He didn’t mention the agreement to go to the amusement park that weekend. Then many years passed in a flash.
S City was a small circle. Shen Yuhuai wasn’t in S City, but some friends he knew would always tell him a bit about S City.
Every New Year’s holiday when his parents came to B City, he would hear about Chen Qizhao from his parents. The child seemed to have entered a rebellious period, and there were always more negative remarks than positive ones. Shen Yuhuai had also seen the photos. The child had grown up but still had some baby fat on his face. The well-behaved appearance from when he was a child could still be seen.
When he was in college, he once returned to S City to attend a family party.
He talked to Chen Qizhao at the party. Chen Qizhao had grown taller and only regarded him as the brother of a friend’s family. After the greeting, there were no other topics. He was no longer as clingy as when he was a child.
Then in the blink of an eye, he came to the Ninth Research Institute of S City due to his mentor’s job transfer. He was entrusted by his friend Yan Kaiqi to take care of his younger brother, Yan Kailin. In the bathroom of a certain bar, the child bumped into him again. The look in his eyes wasn’t the indifference of meeting from a few years ago. It was the indescribable emotion of a long-term reunion.
The memories faded away. The child who was always with him when he was young had also grown up.
The appearance had changed, but the clumsy means of trying to get closer hadn’t changed.
—
The heavy curtains were half-drawn, and Shen Yuhuai opened his eyes.
His body was covered with a blanket. The materials he was still reading before going to bed had been put away at this time and were neatly within his reach.
“Why didn’t you call me when I fell asleep?” Shen Yuhuai looked at the young man next to him.
The young man was sitting on the other side of the sofa with the laptop on his legs. His fingers were tapping quickly on the keyboard, and lines of code appeared on the black background of the software. He frowned slightly, and the movements of his hands didn’t slow down at all.
“I saw you were so sleepy and didn’t call you.” Chen Qizhao didn’t look up and continued to be busy with the coding homework in his hand. “You just slept for half an hour. Sleep for a while.”
On a beautiful Saturday, he was resting at home while Chen Qizhao was doing homework.
Shen Yuhuai lifted the blanket on his body and picked up the half-read information again. He couldn’t help glancing at the young man next to him. In the past two years, Chen Qizhao’s face still had traces of childhood. Then he lost weight after his period of time being ill. His face became sharper after he settled down. There was no more baby fat, and he looked harder to approach on the surface.
Then when looking closely, one would find that his eyebrows weren’t so sharp.
His bone structure was excellent. Chen Qizhao’s skeleton was small and losing this flesh made his bones more obvious.
Shen Yuhuai glanced sideways at him. At this time, the young man writing code with a frown was somewhat similar to the child who couldn’t answer questions. He asked, “How long will it take for the homework to be done?”
“Soon. It will be done in a while. I just have to write a note. Group work is a bit more troublesome.”
“Want to play tomorrow?” Shen Yuhuai suddenly asked.
Chen Qizhao was stunned for a moment. Then he tilted his head to look at Shen Yuhuai. “Where to play?”
Shen Yuhuai thought for a moment. “Amusement park?”
Chen Qizhao had passed the age of going to the amusement park and hesitated a bit when hearing Shen Yuhuai’s proposal. His impression of an amusement park was just noisy children and heavy crowds. However, if Shen Yuhuai wanted to go then he could do it.
“Tomorrow is fine. I can go.”
“Then I’ll go buy a ticket.” Shen Yuhuai smiled when he heard this.
Chen Qizhao typed a few lines of code. “Why do you want to go to the amusement park?”
“I suddenly remembered. I previously promised to take you, but I haven’t taken you there yet.” Shen Yuhuai lowered his eyes. The page on his phone was a famous, local amusement park in S City.
Chen Qizhao was stunned for a moment. He didn’t remember when this promise was made. “When did it happen?”
“I almost forgot about it a long time ago.”
Shen Yuhuai bought the tickets. “Is your coding finished? I want to go to the supermarket to buy something.”
Chen Qizhao’s mind immediately returned. “Give me five minutes.”
Shen Yuhuai put away the other materials and went to the bedroom to get some things. When he came out, Chen Qizhao was already putting away his computer. The weather was cold, so Shen Yuhuai handed him a coat. Chen Qizhao hurriedly put it on and followed him out the door.
They took the elevator, and Chen Qizhao couldn’t help asking again, “When did you say it a long time ago?”
“It was really long ago. I forgot when.” Shen Yuhuai rubbed his head and smoothed the other person’s somewhat messy hair. “Do you want to buy something?”
“The snacks have run out,” Chen Qizhao said. “Did you run out of the things in the bathroom?”
Shen Yuhuai replied, “It is almost used up.”
Chen Qizhao lowered his head to play with his phone and suddenly said, “That one seems to be running out soon.”
Shen Yuhuai paused. “Then buy it.”
“The taste last time wasn’t good.
“Change supermarkets?’
“The ones in the supermarkets are almost the same.”
Once the elevator arrived, Chen Qizhao said, “Let’s change it.”
The two of them finally went to the supermarket far away. Chen Qizhao drove the car, and Shen Yuhuai sat in the passenger seat. After arriving at this place, Shen Yuhuai went down first to confirm the location. Chen Qizhao went to the parking lot to park. He finished parking the car and was about to leave when he saw the wallet left behind in the compartment next to the gearstick. It seemed to be Shen Yuhuai’s wallet.”
Chen Qizhao thought about how this person dropped the wallet in the car. He picked it up, opened it, and looked at it. At a glance, he saw a photo of himself in the wallet compartment. He didn’t know when it was taken. There was the background of a classroom.
Was it taken when Shen Yuhuai picked him up from class?
Chen Qizhao inexplicably thought that if the wallet was a collaboration between the two of them, did he also have to change to a photo of Shen Yuhuai alone? He was about to close the wallet when he suddenly felt that there was the edge of another photo that was a bit exposed. He reached for the photo only to realize that there was another photo below it.
He pulled out the photo and saw his young self smiling at the camera.
In the photo, there was Shen Yuhuai beside him. The two of them were sitting in his room when he was young. It wasn’t known who took the photo, but he was smiling at the camera while Shen Yuhuai, who was doing homework next to him, also happened to raise his head.
Chen Qizhao stared at the photo for a while until there was a knocking sound on the window.
Shen Yuhuai stood outside looking at him, eyes stopped on his hands.
Chen Qizhao pretended to be calm and stuffed the photo back. Then he opened the door and got out of the car. “Didn’t I tell you to wait for me over there?”
“I waited a long time, and you didn’t come.” Shen Yuhuai looked at him with a smile. “What about my wallet?”
Chen Qizhao handed him the wallet. “You forgot to take it.”
“I didn’t say you couldn’t look at it.”
Shen Yuhuai put his wallet into his pocket. He noticed Chen Qizhao’s slightly evasive gaze and slightly lowered his head to kiss the corner of Chen Qizhao’s mouth.
“When did you… shoot…” Before Chen Qizhao’s words finished, his lips and teeth were pried open by Shen Yuhuai. He leaned back against the car, his elbows on the window as he raised his head slightly to kiss his boyfriend.
Shen Yuhuai let him go. The cold fingers suddenly stopped at the corners of Chen Qizhao’s lips.
Chen Qizhao stopped and let the other person move the corners of his lips up.
Shen Yuhuai said, “You used to show two tiger teeth when you smiled.”
Chen Qizhao stopped. He thought of the silly smile in the photo and immediately avoided the question. “Do you still want to go to the supermarket?”
“Let’s go.”
“Why did you take so many photos?”
Shen Yuhuai wondered, “Is there a lot?”
Chen Qizhao replied, “I haven’t seen that photo of doing homework in my home album.”
“It should’ve been taken by my sister in the beginning.”
No wonder why he didn’t have it.
Chen Qizhao thought in his heart. Then he touched Shen Yuhuai’s cold hand. “Why are your hands so cold?”
The two of them walked side by side. Just like the teenagers had come to the present, they would also go to the end.

This is one of the extremely few stories where the main couple having met during childhood doesn’t annoy me. Mostly because their interaction, both at childhood and at adulthood is written so naturally and it’s developed slowly.
