CEFYMA: Chapter 115

In the midst of the overwhelming boos, Qu Miao in the front stood up and yelled to the back, “Shut up!”

Guan Tong and Fang Xiaofeng also stood up and shouted to You Mian on the stage, “You Mian! Come on!”

But faced with the boss of thousands of people, their voices were too weak and were almost drowned out in an instant.

Qian Li clenched her chest and frowned in a worried manner. “These people are here to affect Xiao Mian’s competition. Can they be driven out?”

The few fans of You Mian who managed to grab tickets also shouted under the leadership of Qu Miao’s group.

But this not only failed to quiet down the scene but made the booing even louder.”

“The tickets of these thousands of people were purchased through formal channels. The organizers won’t agree to kick them all out,” Pei Huaiji said solemnly.

Pei Huaiji’s stern eyes were filled with fierce coldness. He raised his hand to signal the staff members waiting beside him, asking all other security personnel to come from backstage, including JL’s bodyguards.

Pei Huaiji trusted You Mian and believed that You Mian wouldn’t be affected by these sounds.

But his heart was gripped so tightly that it hurt.

Soon, a large group of tall men in security uniforms walked into the inner field in a row and stood in the middle of the shouting crowd with an absolutely suppressive attitude.

The reporters’ flashes came faster and faster, and they tapped loudly on their laptops.

The group of fans who disrupted the competition weren’t as stupid as others thought. They actually prepared a solution long ago.

Once security personnel approached them, they would put down their banners and sit in silence. It was as if no fault could be found.

However, once the security personnel left following the shouts of others, the fans who had been silent would immediately raise their banners high again and continue to shout about a shady deal!

A group of staff members played with them like a cat and mouse.

In order to keep the scene quiet, the organizers used loudspeakers to remind the audience no less than five times.

Half an hour later, the deafening booing at the scene finally died down for a while. But the occasional riot still couldn’t be stopped.

This made the artists, scholars, and students who were originally preparing to watch the exciting competition frown in disgust.

“What type of people are these? So disgusting.”

“What idiots! Look at the signs they are holding. They seem to be fans of a bad artist.”

“I’m really speechless. I waited so long for the finals of the Star Cup, but encountered something like this. I’ve never heard of such a thing before.”

“Just watch the competition carefully. At least the contestants aren’t affected and the judges haven’t said anything to stop it. As long as the countdown continues, it means the competition won’t suspend the progress.”

In the judges’ seat, Jaeger Hillman’s eyes gradually changed from occasionally scanning and observing the three contestants to staring solely at You Mian on the center stage.

Lai Zhikuan, the contestant from the costume design group on the left side of the stage, also came with semi-finished products. His dressing table was piled with colorful butterflies of various shapes, as well as accessories in the shape of silkworm bags and caterpillars.

The judges could tell at a glance that Lai Zhikuan wanted to use the idiom ‘breaking out of the cocoon and becoming a butterfly’ to illustrate the theme of rebirth.

Qin Lan, who was sitting in the back row of the audience, nodding slightly while leaning on his crutches. The theme of ‘emerging from the cocoon and becoming a butterfly’ was indeed in line with the theme of rebirth and didn’t deviate from the theme. It was a qualified direction.

On the right side of the stage, Fang Xuenan’s oil painting started entirely from a piece of white cloth.

The audience watched her apply colors and draw shapes on the big screen.

Qin Lan pushed up his reading glasses slightly and saw from the screen that Fang Xuenan had divided the canvas into two parts. Then the girl drew a curve running vertically with the big stroke of her brush.

It seemed to be a bit like the shape of a phoenix reborn from the ashes.

Qin Lan still nodded slightly. The rebirth of a phoenix was also a qualified work.

But after watching the works on the left and right stages, everyone, no matter whether they were audience members or judges, focused their attention on the elevated sculpture in the center.

The competition lasted for two hours. So even though the boos were still there, the audience had strangely become used to it. They could ignore the boos and carefully watch the contestants on the stage.

A giant sculpture that was about to break through the ceiling was placed in the center of the stage.

Such a huge iron frame was almost impossible to not be described as majestic.

You Mian’s sculpture had been primed with plaster and the shape was initially shown. What he needed to do now was outline the delicate texture of the iron sculpture wrapped in plastic.

Qin Lan watched You Mian cut the giant elevated structure with great skill and efficiency, but his worry became more and more obvious.

If the contestants of the other two groups had already started to show the theme of the competition then You Mian’s work in front of them was still a black mass. Apart from being tall and big, it was difficult to tell what he was carving.

The same thought occurred to all the judges in the front row.

Jaeger Hillman listened to the judges whispering beside him. “Hiss, the contestant in the sculpture category might lose. His work is too big. I don’t know if he can finish it within the specified time.”

“The most important problem is that we can’t even see the shape of a finished work right now.”

“He is still carving details like textures. Tsk, what a pity.”

Jaeger Hillman raised his gray eyes slightly. His gaze fell on the seven meter high iron sculpture in front of him.

You Mian was quickly carving out skin texture on the iron. Blue plaster was slightly leaking from the gaps in the iron sculpture. The plaster blood vessels carved off the field, and the black iron on the surface complemented each other. It really looked like a lifelike arm, with clear muscle lines and slightly bulging blood vessels. It was as if this arm was really breathing.

It wasn’t until five minutes later that You Mian’s first human arm was finally carved and the big screen showed it clearly in front of everyone.

There was no doubt that there were bursts of exclamations and screams from the audience.

“My god, this exquisiteness. Is it possible that God Mian is going to use this level on the entire sculpture?”

“He is using his ultimate move! Hahaha.”

“I said that Brother Mian is awesome. Slow work produces fine results.”

“But this is too slow. At this rate, he won’t be able to finish carving, right?”

Guan Tong listened to the voices of the audience and suddenly felt nervous and then relieved. He couldn’t help shaking his legs uncontrollably. “Brother Hao, can you tell what Mianmian is carving?”

Liu Hao bit his nails and shook his head. “But the details are still full.”

Guan Tong frowned in a worried manner. “Many people are saying it won’t be finished…”

Liu Hao hummed. “If You Mian continues carving at this speed for the remaining hour, he definitely won’t finish it.”

The sculpture in front of them was seven meters long. You Mian had only carved most of the left side of the sculpture.

The black mass of iron on the right hadn’t been touched at all.

Fang Xiaofeng was so nervous that he couldn’t even speak. Only Qu Miao stared firmly at the stage and said, “He can finish carving.”

Guan Tong was surprised. “Huh?”

Qu Miao repeated. “Since he is You Mian, he will definitely be able to finish carving.”

The moment Qu Miao finished speaking, Fang Xiaofeng immediately nodded vigorously, “Yes, Senior will definitely be able to finish carving.”

As soon as the conversation between the group of people ended, the audience behind them started to boo again as if they had enough rest.

“Rotten! It sucks!”

“You Mian, get lost!”

“Shh—!”

Bai Lin’s fans shouted frantically. Before the security guards came to stop them, they shouted so hard that it seemed they were going to rip the ceiling of the venue apart.

Once the security guards stood in the position where the crowd’s shouts were the loudest, the group shut up again.

“What’s wrong? If I’m not happy with what I am seeing, can’t I boo?”

“It is so dark that I can’t see anything clearly. What’s wrong with saying it is rotten.”

“That’s right.”

The security guards stopped them seriously and gave them stern warnings.

A row of tall men had the letters JL printed on their uniforms, causing the group to reluctantly stop complaining.

During the endless dispute, a girl holding a fan with Bai Lin’s portrait on it quietly opened Weibo. She wanted to take a photo of You Mian’s work on the stage and mock it. She even thought of the text.

The girl turned on her camera and immediately pointed it toward the center of the stage before the departing security guard noticed.

Hurry up and shoot…

But just when the girl finished observing the security personnel’s movements and her eyes fell on the camera in her hand, her finger that was about to press the camera button suddenly trembled.

The details of the work, which weren’t clear from the back row, became clear in the high-definition camera.

She saw a sculpture of overlapping arms appear in the close-up, high-definition camera.

The blood vessels and veins became increasingly visible under the carving knife. The shock brought by the majestic and solid muscle mass was overwhelming, without any buffer time.

The overlapping muscle contours belonged to the right arm and left arm. Their lines had a ferocious and fierce beauty, as if they were dragging something fiercely. There was so much force that veins were bulging.

The touching and silent shock of this moment was vividly presented before their eyes, making people subconsciously and easily falling into a daze.

This was a completely different world from the feelings brought by just relying on Bai Lin’s big fans’ emphasis on, ‘the surveillance video is fake’, ‘Bai Lin’s entrance examination work is beautiful’ and the ‘solo exhibition that foreign professors are praising.’

The stunning and sharp beauty of the human arms made the girl hesitate to press the camera button. She only vaguely felt that the shouts of other fans around her had inexplicably slowed down a lot.

It turned out that a pair of hands could actually have such power and beauty.

What’s more, at this moment, it wasn’t just a pair of arms that was under You Mian’s carving knife. He carved several pairs of stacked and horizontal arms with exquisite skills.

Just by looking at the direction of the muscles from the upper arms to the forearms, it could be seen that these residual arms belonged to different groups of people, male or female, young or old.

Their fingertips were tightly gripping the trouser legs that fell beneath them.

The girl blinked. She was so moved that she could no longer hold up the banner and fan in her hands and shout the booing sounds she had just made.

Her throat was squeezed by an invisible hand. Her throat was so dry and hoarse that she couldn’t speak.

“Photography isn’t allowed here. Please put your phone away.”

Suddenly, a security guard came over and gave her a serious reminder. She immediately came to her senses and responded by turning off her phone.

A few seconds later, she stuffed the Bai Lin fan that she had just held tightly into her bag and zipped it up.

The cheers gradually subsided like an intermission.

As time passed on the stage, the audience’s voices became more and more enthusiastic.

Lai Zhikuan had almost completed a whole set of catwalk costume designs. He had sewn colorful butterflies and silkworm pupae onto the shoulders, waistbands, and hems of the clothes.

With the dreamy pink and purple colors, all his clothes fit the theme of emerging from a cocoon into a butterfly very well.

Fang Xuenan’s work had also reached the final stage. She had divided the canvas into two scenes, one of heaven and one of hell. In these two spaces of peace and terror, a fiery red phoenix stretched across the canvas and shuttled between the two worlds. It was indeed the phoenix of rebirth.

From time to time, there were bursts of approval from the judges’ seats.

“The degree of completion is very high and detailed. It is a qualified theme work.”

The butterfly and phoenix are just a bit worse in terms of innovation…”

“What does Dean Hillman think?”

The topic was brought to Hillman, the gray-haired man who hadn’t paid attention to the stages on the left and right sides since the opening half, only staring at the sculpture group in the center.

Hillman said casually in German, “We won’t know until the end.”

The judges could see that Hillman had high hopes for the sculpture group. But no matter how high his hopes were, time was running out, and the work still looked like a half-finished product.

“No matter how detailed it is, it has to be completed.”

Sighs rang out all over the place.

Qian Li frowned angrily when listening to these pessimistic comments. She said to herself, “Xiao Mian will definitely be able to finish carving it. Don’t be discouraged in advance.”

Pei Huaiji, who was sitting next to Qian Li, stared at the stage in silence for a long time without saying another word.

Pei Huaiji sharply raised a dark eyebrow. His tense jaw revealed his nervous and restrained mood at this moment.

The man’s back was straight, and his hands were clenched tightly on his knees.

The only thing in You Mian’s eyes was You Mian, who was concentrating on the sculpture in front of him and scraping the sculptor’s knife quickly.

The young man’s forehead was covered with sweat, and the front of his black sweatshirt was dirty. His wrists were shaking from carving for too long, and his neck was so tense that it was a bit stiff.

Don’t stop.

Don’t stop here.

You Mian clenched the knife fiercely with trembling fingertips, scraping the iron sculpture with force, stroke by stroke.

More than a dozen pairs of arms were given new life under his hands.

You Mian continued to climb up the platform without stopping. He started to carve the last incomplete leg movement.

The fluttering trouser legs and muscles hidden under the clothes were covered with plaster, while the iron covering the top added an endless sense of power to this texture.

Beads of sweat ran down his forehead, across the corners of his eyes, and the bridge of his nose. His appearance projected on the big screen was so stunning that the audience gasped audibly.

“There is still a large space on the right side. He can’t finish carving it.”

“It is a pity. The left side is very complete.”

“It is impossible to finish carving such a big sculpture no matter how you think about it.”

You Mian’s ears were once again filled with boos and jeers.

As he moved down one by one, You Mian finished carving the outline of the less.

Now all that was left was the black mass of iron on the right side, which everyone had reservations about.

You Mian wiped the sweat off his face and walked down the platform. He put down the small carving knife and picked up an axe from the tool table.

There were waves of doubtful voices at the scene. No one knew what You Mian was going to do.

There were only 15 minutes left in the countdown. Even if he was given another two hours, he wouldn’t be able to finish carving the entire right side of the sculpture like he just did.

You Mian calmed himself, gripped the axe tightly in his hands, raised it high, and chopped down.

But who said he was going to carve it?

In the midst of the violent chopping sounds, the iron in front of him shattered to the ground.

Qin Lan looked at the stage in shock. Everyone at the scene looked at the stage with the same stunned expression.

It turned out that the iron sculpture on the right only had a thin layer left.

You Mian knocked hard, and the carved part hidden underneath the thin black iron layer was revealed.

The sculpture on the right was in the shape of a huge, iron door.

The seven meter high sculptural gate pointed directly to the ceiling of the venue, reaching the sky and blocking out the sun.

At this moment, the shape of the sculpture on the left that You Mian had just carved also had meaning and explanation.

This was a modern sculpture that froze and decomposed movement in seconds.

The foot, which served as the fulcrum of the sculpture, was fixed on the left side of the iron gate that was seven meters high. Slowly rising from the foot was the movement of the sculpture frozen frame by frame.

The leg dragged by several pairs of arms was being lifted up with difficulty.

It was a powerful kick!

At this moment, the audience could almost hear the deafening sound that this work made!

The towering iron gate remained in a shaky and collapsing state after being kicked open.

Along the fixed foot support, the sculpture stretched upward with all its strength. The limbs stretched outward, longing for…

A fierce kick was frozen and broken down into four stages.

The arms struggled to lift it up and continued to raise it higher and higher, until he kicked out and kicked open the huge door in front of him!

Finally, the foot and hands broke through the iron gate into another world outside.

The sculpture’s mutilated hand slowly extended out the door.

The grayish-white plaster blood vessels were beating, and the iron arm full of muscular strength and texture suddenly relaxed as it passed through the door. The texture and muscle direction suddenly changed from tense, twisted, and painful to relaxed, soft, and peaceful.

The power stored in the sculpture’s fingertips gradually dissipated.

But the limb continued to extend until it reached the outermost edge of the sculpture booth.

The plaster hand carefully picked up a sunflower under the eyes of many people.

The shocking sense of vitality and struggle, the hope after despair was vividly depicted. The twisted fingers and pained arms seemed to have been redeemed and reborn after this bloody struggle.

In the stadium of 10,000 people, everyone was crushed by the shock.

All the booing disappeared completely and all obstacles were cleared away.

Strength and works were the most intuitive rebuttal.

The tick of the countdown sounded.

In the silence of thousands of people, Pei Huaiji was the first to stand up and applaud.

The man’s gaze collided with You Mian on the stage.

Pei Huaiji’s tearful eyes stunned the exhausted You Mian.

Pei Huaiji stared at You Mian proudly and gave the first applause from the audience with absolute appreciation.

Then everyone recovered as if awakened by Pei Huaiji’s applause.

The screams and shouts from the sluggish aftermath resounded exponentially in the vast stadium. The cheers seemed to break through the ceiling.

“Ahhhh! So awesome!”

“God Mian! God Mian! God Mian!”

“Champion! Who can say that this isn’t the champion?!”

“D*mn! This is the first time I have cried after seeing a sculpture!”

Fang Xiaofeng shouted and applauded vigorously while crying. “Senior!”

Guan Tong was provoked by the excited shouts around him. He also got up and shouted.

In addition, Liu Hao could only curse.

Qin Lan sat in the back row and stared up at the sculpture on the big screen with satisfaction. There was a deep smile in his eyes.

Thousands of people shouted in unison, “Gold medal! Gold medal!”

“Take the gold medal!”

Even Bai Lin’s fans, who had been booing the craziest just now, were stunned into silence. The thousands of fans turned against Bai Lin and cheered for You Mian.

Qian Li picked up her handkerchief and gently wiped the corners of her eyes. She was so excited that she teared up.

In the midst of the endless praise and congratulations, Pei Huaiji stood firm and upright. His gentle eyes revealed endless love.

You Mian put down the tools in his hand. He took off the rubber band that tied his hair, raised his hand, and smoothed his hair back, revealing his smooth forehead and spirited and handsome eyes.

In his amber eyes was the happiest smile in the world at this moment.

You Mian felt the cheers for him in the venue.

On the stage, watched by countless people, was his work and his rebirth.

Pei Huaiji didn’t hide his admiration. He stood in the audience, watching You Mian, who was full of vigor and vitality. He clapped while whispering in his heart…

—My genius, my love.

I can’t visualize this sculpture at all. Also, while it is possible to carve iron, it is very slow and laborious to do so. It is also quite impractical to carve plaster directly and much better to simply cast it into the desired finished form based on a mold made from a buck of a more suitable material. This whole final round is just an absolute mess. I understand that the author wants to make it high-action and provide an opportunity for live face-slapping, but it’s just ridiculously poor in conception and shows a fundamental lack of understanding for the arts.

On a side note: the painting sounds trite and banal, with an overused concept. It could be executed well. I don’t know because the description isn’t detailed enough for that, but it legitimately sounds like what an AI image generator would spit out. And then there’s the costume category which is just vapid and uninspired. It’s basically the high fashion equivalent of a costume where, instead of investing real effort into conveying the theme by the holistic construction of the outfit, they have opted to print a character’s face on the chest so you can’t possibly misinterpret who its supposed to be. It’s the difference between a princess gown worn by a Disney princess actor at the park vs. a cheap costume at the store with minimal detail and a picture of the princess plastered across the chest. Low-brow and uncultured. And this is such a good prompt for the costume department too! He could have made transforming costumes! Imagine a short, puffy dress in an attractive light green color bound at the waist with a belt with charming puffy shoulder wraps that clasp with the fabric of the dress using a charming chrysalis brooch that, once the belt and brooch are unfastened, unfurl into a shimmering black mermaid gown with a cape that features an embroidered monarch butterfly wing pattern. It’s just such a missed opportunity.

The painting is just mid, but the wasteful conception of the costume legitimately offends me.

Genuinely appreciate your detailed insights on the processes. But your constant complaint on how the author did not research enough on the sculpting process really kills the mood.

I do appreciate it in the earlier chapters, and I love your insights regarding the costume design, too. Thanks for those.

Tbf it does sound ridiculous. This is not cartoon where the character can make one final crack and the final sculpture will appear. But the author wanted to add a shock factor but this is sculpture…

I was distracted by the utter stupidity of the organizers not kicking out the disruptors. Wdym they just allowed these ppl to boo a contestant for 2 frigging hrs??? Are they babies that have no object permanence? If the person is no longer booing, their disruption is excused? Pissed me off too much to appreciate whatever the sculpture even looks like.
